Hey have you ever heard of a concert involving Caroline Smith & the Goodnight Sleeps, The Hopefuls and the Honeydogs in one night? Well I have because I went to that concert! If no one has heard of the Hopefuls or the Honeydogs then your in for trouble. Caroline and her band were the first to go one. She played the Banjo and Guitar. Along with her nerdy sidekicks Jesse and Alex. The drummer Arlen Peiffer is from the band Cloud Cult and so a lot of the drumming in their songs sounds like Cloud Cults. My favorite person is Alex the piano player. He is cool and wears awesome glasses. I would love to see Caroline and her band sometime again in the near future. But like I was saying her voice is rare and she is very popular for it. I think she is better than Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapells because Caroline's voice is lighter. My favorite song they played was "Clench my Teeth" because it is a very nice and sweet song. Go out and buy their album Backyard Tent Set.
The next band to go on was The Hopefuls. You see I had high expectations for them and I think they fulfilled that expectation. They we're great and played the right songs. When I saw them in December they rocked me away that's why I thought they would be great. Apparently the key tar had been "sick" for awhile. Although I remember them using it when I saw them last time. The key tar was great though, that's because it makes all the sound effects to make the songs work and sound cool. I would have to say that the key tar player is not that good of a singer that's why I love the voice of Darren Jackson "Kid Dakota". Kid Dakota is Darren's solo project and reminds me of his voice in the Hopefuls but also has a little bit of Ben Kweller in it. I would love to see that sometime where he is just with his guitar. The band started out playing "Edge of Medicine" which is my favorite song so of course I'm happy. About a third of the way through Dan Wilson came on and played the rest of the songs with them. I think he is their friend because he went to the other Hopefuls concert in Dec. He was very tall! I enjoyed seeing him up there except I could never here him sing so I didn't see how great he was. The guitar he had was like a classic Black Sabbath guitar. The guitar Darren had was the kind of guitar that Jack White has when he plays in the White Stripes. Go out and buy the Hopefuls album Now playing at the one-seat theater.
The Honeydogs we're like amazing to see because I knew allot about them and their solo projects. Adam Levy had just released his children's CD with his kids called More! More! More! and then came out with this CD, Sunshine Committee. We only got to stay for 3 songs but the second one blew me away! They played "Elan Vital" (now my favorite song) which is a song from their last CD called Amygdala. In the beginning Adam Levy stood up very straight and looked proper which of course got a 'round of applause. The song was just amazing with the horns in the background. I will definitely see them again in the future.
Now so the whole reason I even went to this concert was to review the Honeydogs newest EP called Sunshine Committee. This EP starts out with my favorite song titled after the CD. I like how they made it Jazzy but then with rock. It reminds me allot of the Hold Steady with the piano. I think the Honeydogs would be great on tour with the Hold Steady, it's too bad that they aren't going on tour at all. The band reminds me allot of a bigger version of Ben Kweller. I don't know if I'm just weird or I'm hearing Ben Kweller but I keep mentioning him with the bands I'm talking about. Anyways the next song slows it down into a love song that keeps a steady beat, It's called "Fiber Optic Paramour". It is kinda sad actually. But that's all I really have to say about the first two songs.
"Good Fight" is the 3rd song they played and it is a nice song with a rocking tempo. It plays such a good role in such things as a dance party as that last song at a dance (whatever you call it). It is a great song to start dancing to wherever you are. "Balacavia" is a song also made to dance to. Like most the Honeydog's music is dance music. So when you get this album get up and dance! Its like a song that is irresistible to even just dance in your seat with. In all BUY THIS ALBUM AND GO TO THE NEXT SHOW! Ok well thanks for reading this overdue review. Thank you Retrogirl for that wonderful review of the White Stripes CD Elephant.
Hope your Rockin!
